CM Rupani ‘Karuna Animal Ambulance 1962’ will be launched from October 9 in 26 districts of the state for the treatment, emergency service and treatment of mute animals and birds. Deputy Chief Minister Nitinbhai Patel, Animal Husbandry Minister Kunwarjibhai Bawaliya and Minister of State Bachubhai Khabad will also be present at the function to be held at 10:30 am at Narmada Hall of Swarnim Sankul-1 in Gandhinagar.
CM Rupani will flag off Karuna Animal Ambulance-1962 and will depart for the respective districts. A ‘Compassion Campaign’ was launched for the immediate treatment of birds injured by kite strings during landing. Following the widespread success of this campaign, 108 emergency services like Karuna Animal Ambulance-1962 services have been made available on priority basis from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara District and Municipal Corporation and Mehsana, Palanpur, Bhavnagar with a total of 11 Karuna Animal Ambulance-1962 services from 2017. 22 thousand animals and birds have been treated through these services.
Vijay Rupani has urged the Animal Husbandry Department to give a wider scope to this yajna of service to mute animals. Following this, 26 districts of the state Anand, Aravalli, Sabarkantha, Patan, Nadiad, Gandhinagar, Gir-Somnath, Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Jamnagar, Surendranagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Botad, Morbi, Kutch, Dang, Valsad, Mahisagar, Navsari and Tapi, Karuna Animal Ambulance-1962 will be started from tomorrow in Bharuch, Panchmahal, Dahod and Chhotaudepur and Narmada.
Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM)has been launched in December 2014with an outlay of Rs2025 crore for development and conservation of indigenous breeds through selectivebreeding in the breeding tract and genetic upgradation of nondescript bovine population.The scheme comprises of two components namely National Programme for BovineBreeding (NPBB) and National Mission on Bovine Productivity (NMBP).
Why conservation of Indigenous breeds is the need of the hour?
India has 299.6 million bovine population out of which 190.9 million are cattle and 108.7million are buffaloes. Of this, 80% of cattle are indigenous and Non- descript breeds.The bovine genetic resource of India is represented by 41 registered indigenous breeds ofcattle and 13 registered buffalo breeds. Indigenous bovine are robust and resilient and areparticularly suited to the climate and environment of their respective breeding tracts. Themilk of indigenous animals is high in fat and SNF content.
There are also studies to suggest that the productivity of indigenous breeds will beimpacted to a much lesser extent than exotic animals due to climate change.
