Can silk replace microplastics?

Experimenters at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology( MIT) in the US have developed a biodegradable system grounded on silk to replace dangerous microplastics added to agrarian products, maquillages, and cosmetics.

Microencapsulated pesticide product was also tested in a hothouse on a sludge crop. The test showed it worked indeed better than an being marketable product, inflicting lower damage to the shops, said Muchun Liu, doctoral pupil at MIT. 

 

The secret to making the material compatible with being outfit, Liu explained, is in the tunability of the silk material. 


The material can be hydrophobic( water- repelling) indeed though it's made and reused in a water result, or it can be hydrophilic( water- attracting), or anywhere in between, and for a given operation it can be made to match the characteristics of the material it's being used to replace. 

The new system can make use of low- grade silk that's unworkable for fabrics, and large amounts of which are presently discarded because they've no significant uses, Liu said. It can also use used, discarded silk fabric, diverting that material from being disposed of in tips .
